LISBON, PORTUGAL — August 2026 — Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), alongside co-concessionaires Lusoponte and train operator Fertagus, are proud to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Ponte 25 de Abril. Marking six decades since its historic opening on August 6, 1966, this magnificent suspension bridge remains an international engineering benchmark and an enduring symbol of Portugal’s journey toward modern democracy.
To launch a year-long program of institutional and cultural events, a breathtaking 3D drone light show was executed over the Tagus River. Attended by the Minister for Infrastructure, Miguel Pinto Luz, the spectacle featured 500 synchronized drones recreating the historical milestones, structural evolution, and structural majesty of the bridge.
Six Decades of Mobility, History, and Engineering Excellence
Originally inaugurated as Ponte Salazar during the Estado Novo regime, the structure was famously renamed Ponte 25 de Abril following the Carnation Revolution of 1974. This change forever transformed it into a monument of national freedom.
Built in less than four years by the American Bridge Company, the bridge is celebrated not only for its striking visual similarity to California’s iconic suspension bridges but also for its massive, state-of-the-art seismic engineering.
Today, it stands as Portugal’s busiest crossing:
Daily Commuters: Serves over 150,000 vehicles and 157 trains daily.
Massive Proportions: Features a main suspension span of 1,013 meters and a total length of 2,277 meters.
Deep Foundation: Supported by metal towers rising 196 meters above water level, with a south pier plunging a historic 80 meters below the riverbed.
Multimodal Infrastructure: Expanded in 1999 to add a lower-deck railway, making it the largest crossing in Europe to seamlessly combine heavy road and rail traffic.
“The Ponte 25 de Abril is much more than an infrastructural connection between two riverbanks; it is a living heritage woven into the collective memory of our country,” stated representatives from Infraestruturas de Portugal. “As we mark 60 years of service, this engineering marvel continues to adapt, support economic development, and stand prepared for the future challenges of metropolitan mobility”.
Commemorative initiatives, historical exhibitions, and community stories will continue to be rolled out across the country throughout the year.
Os Primeiros Desenhos (Século XIX)
1876: O engenheiro Miguel Pais apresenta o primeiro projeto estruturado. O plano previa uma ponte mista (rodoferroviária) ligando Lisboa ao Barreiro.
1889: Os engenheiros Alphonse Bartissol e Théophile Seyrig (discípulo de Gustave Eiffel) desenham uma nova proposta de travessia.
O Projeto Definitivo (Século XX)
1953: O governo cria uma comissão técnica para avaliar a viabilidade de uma ligação central entre Lisboa e Almada.
1960: Lançamento do concurso internacional público para a conceção e execução da obra.
1962: O contrato é atribuído à American Bridge Company. A mesma empresa participou no desenvolvimento de pontes icónicas como a San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge nos EUA

Evolução e Inauguração
Inauguração (1966): Abre oficialmente a 6 de agosto com o nome de Ponte Salazar, homenageando o ditador António de Oliveira Salazar.
Revolução (1974): Após a Revolução dos Cravos a 25 de abril, a população remove as letras do antigo nome. A estrutura é rebatizada como Ponte 25 de Abril.
Expansão Ferroviária (1999): O desenho original já previa a inclusão de comboios. O tabuleiro inferior ferroviário foi finalmente inaugurado no final dos anos 90, permitindo a passagem dos comboios da Fertagus.
