AMR is a huge global challenge threatening our health. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is crucial to address because it turns common, treatable infections into deadly threats, directly causing over 1 million deaths annually and risking up to 39 million more by 2050.
For over thirty years Denmarkβs integrated AMR surveillance programme, DANMAP has been a global frontrunner in systematically collecting and analysing data on antimicrobial use (AMU) and resistance across humans, animals and food. The Danish model demonstrates how strong data, transparency and cross-sector collaboration can drive responsible antibiotic use while maintaining high standards in both public health and livestock production.

Denmark and Bangladesh work together to combat AMR. A delegation from the Strategic Sector Cooperation for food and agriculture in Bangladesh went to Denmark in our joint work to combat antimicrobial resistance. The theme was AMR and AMU data collection and how to use data collection and surveillance to not just get a better understanding of the problem, but also prevent the problem in a One Health approach. Inspired by 30 years of Danish experience through DANMAP, discussions focused on how robust surveillance systems can inform policy and behaviour change.
AMR comes from overuse and misuse of antibiotics, and is affected from both human health, livestock production and from the environment. The delegation therefore both crossed paths with The Danish Veterinary, Food, Agriculture and Fishery Agency (FΓΈdevarestyrelsen), Statens Serum Institut, DTU – Technical University of Denmark, LΓ¦gemiddelstyrelsen (Danish Medicines Agency), Danish Health Authority, and ICARS. To solve the challenges, a coordinated approach is needed. We are proud to work together with Bangladesh in their efforts and look forward to continuing to take the next steps to combat AMR together.
