OSUN 2026: TOURISM EMERGES AS A MAJOR ECONOMIC DRIVER UNDER COMMISSIONER’S TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP By Phillip O. Tinubu, MPA

As Nigeria continues to diversify its economy beyond oil, Osun State has positioned itself as one of the nation’s most promising tourism destinations. In 2026, the state’s tourism sector is witnessing unprecedented growth, driven by strategic policies, infrastructure development, cultural preservation initiatives, and innovative tourism marketing under the leadership of the Commissioner for Tourism, Hon. Abiodun Bankole Ojo (Fafa).
Over the past year, the Ministry of Tourism has intensified efforts to transform Osun into a premier cultural and eco-tourism hub in West Africa. Building on the state’s rich heritage, including the globally celebrated Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, the administration has pursued a comprehensive tourism agenda focused on sustainability, investment attraction, and community participation.

The Commissioner for Tourism, Fafa has spearheaded several initiatives aimed at improving visitor experiences across the state’s numerous attractions. From the revitalization of historical sites and enhancement of access roads to tourism destinations, to the promotion of cultural festivals and private-sector partnerships, the ministry’s vision has been clear: make tourism a key contributor to Osun’s economic prosperity.

One of the administration’s notable achievements has been the strengthening of the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival, which continues to attract thousands of local and international visitors. The festival remains a powerful symbol of Yoruba heritage and has become a significant platform for cultural diplomacy, hospitality development, and investment promotion.

Beyond cultural tourism, the state has expanded attention to eco-tourism destinations such as Erin-Ijesha Waterfalls, Ayikunnugba Waterfall, and other natural attractions that showcase Osun’s environmental beauty. Improved facilities, enhanced security, and increased digital visibility have contributed to a steady rise in tourist arrivals.

Industry stakeholders have commended the ministry’s efforts to engage local communities in tourism development. Through capacity-building programs, artisan support schemes, and cultural entrepreneurship initiatives, residents are increasingly becoming active participants and beneficiaries of the tourism value chain.

The economic impact is becoming increasingly visible. Hotels, transportation providers, restaurants, artisans, and small businesses have reported increased patronage, creating employment opportunities and stimulating local economic growth. Analysts believe that sustained investment in tourism infrastructure could position Osun as one of Nigeria’s leading tourism economies within the next decade.

Looking ahead, the prospects for tourism in Osun State remain exceptionally bright. Plans are underway to attract international investors, develop tourism corridors, establish modern recreational facilities, and leverage digital technology to market Osun’s attractions to a global audience. The ministry is also exploring opportunities in conference tourism, heritage tourism, and creative economy development.
Experts note that tourism has the potential to become one of the state’s strongest sources of internally generated revenue if current momentum is maintained. With its unique blend of culture, history, spirituality, and natural beauty, Osun possesses assets capable of competing with some of Africa’s most recognized tourism destinations.

As 2026 progresses, the work of the Commissioner for Tourism continues to reflect a broader vision, one that sees tourism not merely as entertainment, but as a catalyst for economic transformation, cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and international recognition.

For many observers, Osun’s tourism story is no longer just about potential; it is increasingly becoming a model of how strategic leadership and cultural heritage can drive sustainable development and create lasting prosperity for future generations. Watch out for Vision 2030.
