Charting the Future of Cruise Travel at TOURISE Riyadh
The global travel and tourism community gathered in Riyadh for TOURISE, a landmark event hosted by the Ministry of Tourism of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where industry leaders explored the future of travel, investment, and innovation. Among the most compelling sessions was “Sailing Into Tomorrow: The New Age of Cruise Travel,” a high-level discussion that examined how the cruise sector is evolving to meet changing traveler expectations, environmental responsibilities, and economic priorities.
The session brought together some of the most influential voices in global tourism and cruising, led by Manfredi Lefebvre, Chair of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Chairman of Heritage Group Monaco, and Co-Chairman of Abercrombie & Kent. His leadership framed the conversation around opportunity, responsibility, and collaboration in shaping the next era of cruise travel.

Joining him on stage were:
- J.D. O’Hara, CEO of Internova Travel Group
- Lars Clasen, CEO of Cruise Saudi
- Chris Theophilides, CEO of Celestyal Cruises
- Jordi Carnes, Former CEO of Visit Barcelona
The discussion was expertly moderated by Kelly Craighead, former CEO of CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association), ensuring a focused and forward-looking exchange.
A New Direction for Cruise Tourism
The panel explored how the cruise industry is navigating a transformative period marked by three key priorities:
Elevating Luxury and Guest Experience
Cruise travel is increasingly positioning itself as a premium, experience-driven product. Operators are investing in more sophisticated itineraries, culturally immersive shore excursions, and higher standards of onboard hospitality to attract discerning travelers.
Prioritising Sustainability
Environmental responsibility took center stage in the conversation. Panelists highlighted the industry’s shift toward cleaner fuels, more efficient vessels, and responsible destination management. There was a shared recognition that the future of cruising depends on minimizing environmental impact while delivering meaningful travel experiences.
Strengthening Economic Impact for Destinations
Beyond tourism numbers, the discussion emphasized how cruise travel can create sustainable economic value for host communities through job creation, local partnerships, and responsible tourism development.
Addressing Industry Challenges
The panel did not shy away from critical issues facing the sector, particularly:
- Visa policies and travel accessibility
- Taxation frameworks affecting cruise operations
- Regulatory barriers across different markets
Speakers agreed that stronger collaboration between governments, cruise operators, and destination authorities is essential to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring smoother, more inclusive travel experiences.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Despite challenges, the tone of the discussion was optimistic. The panelists collectively articulated a vision for a more resilient, inclusive, and enriching global travel ecosystem—one that benefits both travelers and the communities they visit.
This forward-thinking perspective aligns closely with Saudi Arabia’s growing role in shaping the future of global tourism, particularly through initiatives such as Cruise Saudi and major tourism investments along the Red Sea.
Acknowledging Saudi Leadership
WTTC expressed its deep appreciation to His Excellency Ahmed bin Aqil Al Khateeb, Minister of Tourism of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for his invitation, hospitality, and visionary leadership in hosting TOURISE.
His commitment to positioning Saudi Arabia as a global tourism hub was evident throughout the event, reinforcing the Kingdom’s strategic ambition to become a major player in international travel and cruise tourism.
