The Lisbon Municipal Police participated, once again, in the traditional Procession of Our Lady of Health, held this Sunday, May 10.

Known as the “Gunners Procession”, this is one of the oldest religious manifestations in the city of Lisbon, originating in the 16th century, in the reign of D. Sebastião, after the devastating epidemic of the “Great Plague” that killed about 60,000 Lisbots.

In fulfillment of a promise made by the gunners quartered at São George Castle, a chapel was built dedicated to Our Lady of Health, which withstood the passing of the centuries, the earthquake of 1755 and several other seismic tremors.

The procession took to the street for the first time on April 20, 1570 and, over the centuries, has had the presence of kings and queens of Portugal.

The Lisbon Municipal Police officers had the honor of transporting the andor of Santa Ana along the route, which passed through Mouraria, Intendente, Avenida Almirante Reis, Martim Moniz and Plaza da Figueira, in a procession marked by andoras, philharmonic bands and military representatives.

PML is proud to participate in this secular tradition that preserves our city’s history, culture and identity.

The Procession of Our Lady of Health returned this Sunday to the streets of Lisbon, renewing a tradition with more than 450 years.

Also known as the “Gunners’ Procession”, it was born in the 16th century, after the plague epidemic hit Lisbon.

The procession went through Mouraria, the Intendente, Avenida Almirante Reis, Martim Moniz and Plaza da Figueira, among walkers, philharmonic bands and military representatives.
