Rock & Pop Guru Azam Khan : The Life, Legacy, Music and Enduring Journey of Uchcharon

TT NEWS Desk : Rock & Pop Guru Azam Khan : The Life, Legacy, Music and Enduring Journey of Uchcharon

Among the pioneers who shaped the history of Bangladeshi band music, few names command as much admiration, affection and respect as Rock & Pop Guru Azam Khan. More than a singer, he was a cultural phenomenon, a voice of post-independence Bangladesh, and one of the principal architects of Bengali band music.

Born on February 28, 1950, in Azimpur, Dhaka, Azam Khan displayed a deep passion for sports, culture and music from an early age. When the Liberation War of 1971 began, he took up arms and joined the struggle for Bangladesh’s independence. As a frontline freedom fighter under Sector 2, he played a significant role in the nation’s fight for freedom.

Following independence, Azam Khan exchanged the battlefield for the stage, replacing weapons with a guitar. Determined to inspire a new generation, he introduced fresh sounds, themes and musical expressions to a newly independent nation. His musical journey began with Kranti Shilpi Gosthi before he went on to establish the legendary band Uchcharon, a group that would usher in a new era in Bangladeshi music.

At a time when band music was frequently dismissed as “alien” or “counter-cultural,” Azam Khan and Uchcharon boldly fused rock, pop and folk influences with Bengali lyrics and sensibilities. Their work not only gained widespread popularity but also helped establish band music as an integral part of Bangladesh’s cultural mainstream.

Among Azam Khan’s most celebrated songs are Hridoy Shagor Morubhumi, Bangladesh, Ma Go Ma, Saleka Maleka, Alal O Dulal, Prem Chirodin Dure Dure, Obhimani, Papri, Jibon Sathi, Chup Chup Chup, Hay Allah, Ashi Ashi, and Jibone Kichu Pabo Na. Many of these songs are now regarded as classics of Bangladeshi band music and continue to resonate with younger generations.

Azam Khan’s contribution to the establishment of band music in Bangladesh remains unparalleled. He popularized a genre that many initially viewed with skepticism. Through his innovative musical vision and songs rooted in the language and experiences of ordinary people, he inspired generations of musicians and listeners alike. His pioneering efforts paved the way for countless bands that followed and helped elevate Bangladeshi band music to its present stature.

Throughout his career, Azam Khan received numerous accolades both at home and abroad. In the early 1990s, he was honored by the legendary band Souls during its 20th anniversary celebrations. Later, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Channel i Music Awards.

In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to Bangladesh’s cultural heritage, the Government of Bangladesh posthumously conferred upon him the nation’s two highest civilian honors — the Ekushey Padak (2019) and the Independence Award (2025).

Despite such prestigious recognitions, Azam Khan always valued the love of his audience above all else. He often remarked:

“The greatest award I have ever received is the love people have for my songs.”

After a prolonged battle with cancer, Azam Khan passed away on June 5, 2011. Yet his departure marked only the end of a physical journey. His music, ideals, struggle and cultural legacy continue to inspire millions.

The Evolution of Uchcharon: A Historical Lineage

The original 1972 lineup of Uchcharon featured Azam Khan on lead vocals, Ishtiaq Rahman on lead guitar, Larry on bass guitar, Nilu on rhythm guitar, Idu on drums, Hablu on conga and Babu on backing vocals. This pioneering lineup represented one of the earliest and most courageous experiments in post-independence Bangladeshi band music.

In 1976, Uchcharon was reorganized with Azam Khan joined by lead guitarist Nayan Haque Munshi, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Dulal Zoha, bassist Fuad Naser, conga player Kajol and drummer Peyaru Khan. It was during this period that songs such as Alal O Dulal achieved tremendous popularity, firmly establishing Uchcharon as one of the country’s leading bands.

During the 1980s, the band entered a new creative phase with the addition of legendary guitarist Rocket. Alongside Azam Khan, the lineup included Rocket on lead guitar, Masum Haider on bass, Dulal Zoha on rhythm guitar and backing vocals, and Babu on drums. This era produced enduring favorites including Obhimani, Jibon Sathi, and Papri.

From the 1990s until Azam Khan’s passing in 2011, nearly fifty musicians performed alongside him at various times. Among them were Rabel (backing vocals), Ifran (lead guitar), Jubran (bass guitar), Topu (drums) and many other talented artists who contributed to Uchcharon’s concerts and recordings over the decades.
